CHALET ISKAR - July 07 BUILd UPDATE

Building work is progressing well at the Chalet Iskar site, in the mountain village of Beli Iskar. We are now into the third month of the build (due for completion in Dec 07) and this week our builders concentrated their efforts on the underground car park roof and on the walls of the lower basement bedrooms of the split level apartments.

We are updating our site almost weekly with build reports and photographs, so make sure you visit the Chalet Iskar build pages and keep up to date with this exciting new development.

FEATURE ARTICLE: FESTIVAL OF ZELNIK

Zelnik - A tasty Bulgarian pastry Saturday the 30th June 2007 saw the famous Rilski Zelnik Festival in Beli Iskar, an annual folk festival where all the guests have the chance to taste the famous, local dish "Rilski Zelnik"


Zelnik is a traditional Bulgarian pastry prepared by layering a mixture of whisked eggs and pieces of delicious, Sirene Cheese (very similar to Feta) and Spinach between filo pastry and then baking it in the oven.

"After the official tasting and prize giving ceremony, the party continued with national Bulgarian dancers, local groups Rilski Ruchei; and Shishmanovskite Babi; and of course eating Zelnik and drinking beer!"

The biggest and most popular event of the festival is the contest for the most tasty Zelnik dish. This year, the event was won by an eighteen year old girl from Beli Iskar village, much to the surprise of the veteran contestants! It goes to prove that the tradition of Zelnik and this wonderful festival is continuing and being passed onto the younger generations. The oldest contestant to take part was a 97 year old grandma, again from Beli Iskar itself.

After the official tasting and prize giving ceremony, the party continued with national Bulgarian dancers, local groups “Rilski Ruchei” and "Shishmanovskite Babi” and of course eating Zelnik and drinking beer!  The event was overseen by the Mayor of Beli Iskar and drew a large crowd. It was also televised live on the national television network.

super borovets update

Investment from Oman

Equest managing partner Georgi Krumov recently announced that the Investment fund Equest and Oman investors have set up a partnership to implement the eagerly awaited Super Borovets project.

The joint venture Borovets Invest now owns 67% of Rila Samokov 2004, the project company that owns 2 million sq m of land in Bulgaria's Borovets mountain area for further development into residential second homes and associated infrastructure.

Equest has contributed 10 million euro to the partnership where ownership is evenly split between the two investors. The size of the Oman investment in the joint venture was not disclosed.

Earlier this year Equest invested 15 million euro in the capital of Rila Samokov 2004 to gain entry into the project.

Borosport AD announces huge investment in Borovets

Borosport AD (responsible for the management of Ski facilities in Borovets) has announced that it will invest 70 million Levs over the next 3 years in improving Bulgaria's oldest ski resort. Planned improvements over the investment period include:

  • New ski runs
  • New ski equipment
  • New installations for the provision of more artificial snow
  • Extension of existing ski runs to 120km
  • Development of new ski lifts and replacement of existing ski lifts
  • New ski lifts at Markudjik 1 and 2 ski runs

Borovets is the target of many new major investment projects. The biggest of these projects is the Super Borovets project which has attracted large investment from British fund Equest and holding company Chimimport (Dnevnik) to name but a few!

These recently announced improvements will help to achieve the aim of making Borovets a truly "all year round" resort.
