FEATURE ARTICLE: the rila national park

The largest nature reserve in Bulgaria, Rila National Park is located in the Rila Mountains and comprises the areas above the tree line along the mountain ridge and sections of the coniferous forests below it. Its territory occupies 30% of the entire mountain range. The mountain peaks along the main ridges rise to an average height of 2,700 metres above sea level. This includes the highest peak in the Balkan Peninsula: Moussala at 2,925m, which is the location of the top ski resort of Borovets. There are large meadows, over 100 peaks that tower over 2,000m tall and various rock faces, precipices, caves, canyons and waterfalls. The most famous rock formation in this area is the imposing Eagles Rock, that forms the backdrop to Beli Iskar.

- Lowest elevation: the area above Blagoevgrad, at 800m above sea level
- Wooded area: 53,481 hectares

- There are four nature reserves, with a combined area of 16,222.1 hectares

The National Park offers unrivalled opportunities for any visitor.
